Scalp Therapy Professional Course
Official Workshop Syllabus & Standards
Course Overview & Objectives
The Scalp Therapy Professional Course is a comprehensive and practical training program designed for individuals who want to develop professional knowledge and practical skills in scalp care, cleansing, scalp health improvement, and the design of specialized scalp therapy protocols.
Throughout this course, students first become familiar with the anatomy and physiology of the scalp, hair follicle structure, and the hair growth cycle. They then learn the principles of professional scalp analysis, including the identification of different scalp types, sebum levels, dandruff, scaling, inflammation, and other visible signs, enabling them to accurately assess the condition of the scalp.
A significant part of the course focuses on understanding common scalp disorders and different types of hair loss, including Telogen Effluvium, Androgenetic Alopecia, Alopecia Areata, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Folliculitis, Psoriasis, and other related conditions. The objective of this section is to enhance students’ ability to recognize signs and symptoms, select appropriate supportive care, and identify cases that require referral to a qualified medical professional.
Students will also be introduced to professional shampoos and scalp-care products, scalp scrub therapy, cocktail therapy, acid therapy, carboxytherapy, ozone therapy, iontophoresis, Micromist, and other technologies used in professional scalp therapy, with instruction on their proper application through both theoretical and practical training.
The ultimate goal of the course is not simply to teach students how to use products and devices. Rather, it is designed to develop professional Scalp Therapists who can accurately analyze the scalp, identify the primary concern, understand the boundaries of their professional scope of practice, and design and perform an appropriate scalp-care and treatment protocol based on each individual’s condition.
By combining scientific knowledge, professional scalp analysis, product and ingredient education, device technology, and practical skills, this course is designed to prepare students to apply their knowledge confidently and professionally in real-world salon and beauty-industry environments.
Professional Note: Scalp disorders and hair loss are covered in this course for the purposes of recognition, preliminary differentiation, appropriate supportive care, and identification of cases requiring medical referral. The medical diagnosis and medical treatment of scalp diseases and pathological hair-loss conditions fall outside the professional scope of a Scalp Therapist and should be managed by a qualified physician or dermatologist.
In this section, students first develop a scientific understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and functions of the scalp. Topics: Anatomy of the scalp and skull Layers of the skin and structure of the hair follicle Sebaceous glands and the role of sebum Functions and physiological roles of the scalp Structure of the hair shaft and hair root Hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen The concept of follicular miniaturization Factors affecting scalp health and hair growth The role of hormones, nutrition, stress, and environmental factors Objective: Students will understand the relationship between scalp condition, hair follicles, and the quality of hair growth.
This section forms the practical foundation of all scalp treatments, as no treatment protocol should begin without a proper scalp analysis. Topics: Normal scalp Dry scalp Oily scalp Combination scalp Sensitive scalp Dehydrated scalp Scalp with dandruff and scaling Inflammation-prone scalp Assessment of sebum levels Examination of pores and hair follicles Assessment of redness, scaling, inflammation, and lesions Introduction to different scalp analyzers Scalp imaging and documentation techniques Creating a client consultation and treatment record Identifying conditions suitable for salon-based care and those requiring medical referral Objective: Students learn how to assess the actual condition of the scalp before selecting products, techniques, or devices.
This section should focus on recognizing and differentiating scalp disorders, rather than simply memorizing disease names. Topics: Dandruff and its different types Seborrheic dermatitis Atopic dermatitis Psoriasis Folliculitis Scalp acne Head lice Tinea infections Malassezia Demodex Endothrix and ectothrix fungal infections Lichen planus Other common scalp disorders Visible signs and warning symptoms Etiology of scalp disorders Predisposing factors Basic differential recognition Contraindications to scalp treatments and indications for medical referral Important Educational Note: This section should clearly define the professional boundaries between a scalp therapist and a dermatologist, particularly regarding infectious and inflammatory disorders and pathological forms of hair loss.
This can be one of the most valuable sections of the program, as hair loss is one of the most common reasons clients seek professional scalp care. Topics: Definition of hair loss The normal hair-shedding cycle Difference between normal and pathological hair loss Telogen Effluvium Androgenetic Alopecia Alopecia Areata Trichotillomania Hirsutism Follicular miniaturization The role of DHT Hormonal factors Nutritional factors Stress and environmental factors Underlying medical conditions Medications and hair loss Assessment of hair-loss patterns Initial assessment and medical referral Principles of prevention and scalp care for individuals experiencing hair loss
This section provides a highly practical module for addressing common scalp concerns. Topics: Function of the sebaceous glands Factors that increase sebum production Oily scalp Causes of excessive scalp oiliness Relationship between excess sebum, dandruff, and inflammation Methods for preventing excessive oiliness Home care and supportive care approaches Types of dandruff Causes of dandruff Difference between dry and oily dandruff Malassezia and its role Microbial factors associated with scalp problems Scalp hygiene principles Selection of appropriate shampoos and scalp-care products Common mistakes in scalp cleansing
In this section, students move beyond simply using products toward understanding their functions and making appropriate product selections. Topics: Different types of shampoos and their applications Professional scalp-care shampoos Scalp scrubs Different types of acids and acid therapy Dos and don’ts of acid therapy Cocktails and formulations used in scalp therapy Cocktail therapy Cocktail preparation procedures Principles of ingredient selection according to scalp condition Product and cocktail processing times OTC products and their appropriate scope of use Contraindications Patch testing and safety considerations Interactions between ingredients and treatment methods Objective: Students learn which product or ingredient to use, for which scalp condition, for what purpose, and under what circumstances.
This section transforms theoretical knowledge into practical treatment protocols. Topics: Client preparation Scalp preparation Different shampooing techniques Correct scalp-cleansing techniques Scalp scrub therapy Cocktail therapy Acid therapy Carboxytherapy Step-by-step execution of each technique Correct treatment sequence Processing time and exposure control Monitoring the scalp’s response Pre- and post-treatment care Designing customized protocols for different scalp types
This section should be completely practical and protocol-based; simply introducing the devices is not sufficient. Topics: Principles of operation of scalp therapy devices Absorption and infusion devices Micromist Proper Micromist settings for different scalp types Ozone therapy Iontophoresis Devices used for scalp preparation and treatment Correct device operation Selecting the appropriate device according to the treatment objective Proper sequencing of devices and products Contraindications Safety principles Device disinfection and maintenance
Scalp massage should not be considered merely an auxiliary technique; it can be incorporated as a complementary component of a professional treatment protocol. Topics: Principles of scalp massage Scalp preparation Different scalp massage techniques Appropriate pressure and rhythm Massage directions and pathways Massage techniques for dry scalp Massage techniques for oily scalp Contraindications to scalp massage Combining massage with other scalp treatments Designing combined treatment protocols Correct sequencing of massage, scrubbing, products, and devices
This section is designed to take the student beyond simply being a device operator and toward becoming a professional Scalp Therapist. Topics: Conducting the initial scalp analysis Identifying the primary scalp concern Defining treatment objectives Selecting appropriate products and ingredients Selecting the appropriate devices Determining the correct treatment sequence Determining processing and exposure times Performing a complete scalp therapy session Before-and-after documentation Evaluating treatment outcomes Planning subsequent sessions Home-care recommendations Client education Treatment contraindications Identifying cases requiring medical referral Common mistakes made by scalp therapists Designing customized protocols for different scalp conditions
